Faith Over Fear: The Mindset Shift Every Virtual Assistant Needs
At some point, every aspiring entrepreneur faces a defining moment—a moment where they have to choose between giving in to fear or trusting themselves enough to take that leap of faith.
For me, that moment came when I sat down at my desk, opened my computer, and made a decision that changed my life forever.
I remember the moment like it was yesterday. I was sitting at my desk, wrestling with doubt and uncertainty about the future. Should I quit my stable 9-5 job? Could I really create a business that would support me financially? The fear of failure was huge, but I made a conscious decision to choose faith instead.
This wasn’t faith in a higher power (though if you have that, it can be an added source of strength). This was faith in myself. I reflected on past challenges I’d overcome and reminded myself that everything I had truly committed to in my life had worked out because I pushed through the fear and figured it out along the way.
It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was a crucial one: I made the choice to believe that if I set my mind to something, I could achieve it.
If you’re reading this and wondering whether you have what it takes to start or grow your own Virtual Assistant business, I want you to know that you do.
The first step is making the decision to believe in yourself.
Fear of Failure: The Silent Roadblock
My big realization that day was that I had been letting my fear of failure dictate my actions—or, more accurately, my inaction. Even though I hadn’t experienced any significant failures in my VA business up to that point, I was paralyzed by the thought of failing.
Does that sound familiar?
Maybe you’ve tried starting a business before, but it didn’t go as planned. Maybe you’ve been working in your VA business for a while but can’t seem to grow it to the level you want. Whatever your situation, fear has likely held you back from fully committing, from taking those bold steps that could make all the difference.
In that defining moment, I thought about the many, many, many businesses I had tried to start and why they hadn’t succeeded.
I tried to start a creative agency, I tried to start a face mask company… And guess what? They all failed.
Looking back now, I realize it’s because I never fully committed to them. I didn’t stick with any of those ventures for more than a few months—not because they weren’t good ideas, but because I hadn’t made the decision that I’m going to share with you today. That decision changed everything.
What was that decision? I made a vow to myself that for the next 24 hours, I would do things I had never done before. I would take bold action, and I would see what happened.
Taking Bold Action and Going All-In on My VA Business
I started by reaching out to people I hadn’t spoken to in years. I let them know that I was starting a Virtual Assistant business. I didn’t have a clear plan at the time, and I certainly didn’t have all the answers, but I took action anyway.
Next, I turned to Upwork. Now, I know Upwork gets a lot of hate in the VA community, but let me tell you—I’ve found massive success on Upwork. (In fact, I still teach women in the VA Accelerator program to look for clients on Upwork—particularly when they’re starting out in their VA business—because it can be a great place to find amazing clients.)
Within the first 24 hours of making the decision to choose faith over fear and create a profile on Upwork, I landed my first client. And guess what? That client is still with me over a decade later. (Crazy, right?)
That’s the power of taking purposeful action. You don’t need to have all the answers or a perfect plan. You just need to believe in yourself enough to take the first step.
After landing that first client, things began to move quickly. Within 4 months, I put in my notice at my 9-5 job. Shortly after that, I landed my second client. Again, when it came time to officially leave my full-time job, I had to make that same choice: faith over fear.
What Does Faith Over Fear Look Like for You?
Every significant milestone in my business has required me to make that decision again and again. Whether it’s investing in a new skill, raising my rates, or hiring a team, the choice to believe in myself has been the driving force behind my success.
And here’s the hard truth: You will have to make that decision multiple times throughout your VA journey. It’s not a one-time thing.
Every time you’re faced with something new or scary, you’ll need to choose faith over fear. But every time you do, you’ll feel stronger and more confident.
You don’t have to follow my exact path. Maybe you don’t want to scale your VA business to 6 figures. Maybe you want to stay small and work with a few clients on the side. Or maybe you have big dreams of building a VA agency or using your VA business as a stepping stone to something else.
No matter what your goals are, the principle remains the same: You have to choose faith over fear.
You need to intentionally decide to believe in yourself, even when you don’t feel like you have all the faith in the world. Muster up whatever confidence you have, no matter how small, and make that your focus. Push the fear aside, and start taking action from a place of faith.
5 Steps for Putting Faith Over Fear in Your Virtual Assistant Business
So, how do you actually do this? How do you start choosing faith over fear in your own life and VA business?
Here are 5 steps to help you get started:
Acknowledge your fear: It’s okay to be afraid. It’s totally normal, but the key is not to let fear control you. Recognize it, but don’t let it dictate your actions.
Take small, bold steps: You don’t have to make huge, life-changing decisions right away. Start by taking small steps outside of your comfort zone and see where they lead.
Remind yourself of past successes: Look back at things you’ve accomplished in the past, especially those that seemed scary at first. Use those wins as evidence that you can handle whatever comes next.
Seek support: Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Whether it’s a mentor, a coach, or a supportive community, having others in your corner can help reinforce your faith in yourself.
Visualize your success: Picture yourself a year from now, having achieved your goals. What does that look like? How does it feel? Use that vision to fuel your confidence.
The Choice is Yours
At the end of the day, choosing faith over fear is a decision you will have to make over and over again. But every time you do, you’ll move one step closer to success. You will be successful in your Virtual Assistant business if you choose to trust yourself and take purposeful action.
Today, I encourage you to ask yourself: What can you do to choose faith over fear? Whether it’s reaching out to a potential client, learning a new skill, or finally quitting your 9-5, make the decision today to believe in yourself.
